Beginning July 1, 2017, a new child support law went into effect in Illinois. Now all divorcing parents of minor children will be held accountable for child-rearing costs, not just the parent earning the greater income or the parent with whom the child or children do not physically reside.
What does this new child support law mean for parents getting a divorce?
Well, depending on several factors, both parents will be required to contribute a percentage of their net income, calculated by a ratio that each parent’s net income bear to both parent’s net incomes. That percentage factor is then applied to a total dollar figure as published in a schedule put forth by the Illinois Department of Health and Family Services.
Ultimately, in many cases, both parents will be required to contribute monetarily to the care of minor children.
